Daffodil Bowl
Sept 5th, 2021

Total Paid Out: $12,711.00

Wrap Up

Our Return to  Daffodil Bowl for 3rd Quarter Championship should becalled a PERFECT Tournament.  Ideal scoring conditions, a huge number of attempts at the 9 Tap Jackpot, and unbelievable close scoring in the Finals.  The scoring ranged from a top score of 1035 and the low to qualify in Sundays squad was a 882 series.  With a 160 entries we Qualified 33 bowlers into the Finals. The Top 5 bowlers all got a 'bye' into the second round.  Round #1 there were 28 bowlers who started with the bottom 9 scores being eliminated. Round two, the 5 byes were added for 24 bowlers total, with the low 8 scores going out, leaving us with the SWEET 16.  This now became a head to head 'Bracket' competition, beat your opponent and move on.

The 9-Tap Jackpot took a beating this weekend, pretty much as we predicted, but IT SURVIVED (still $7,124.00)!!  We had Kim Pohlet start the day with the front 5 Taps.  Over the course of the day we had many bowlers stringing Taps, some going for the middle 7-Taps, lots getting strings of taps that got interupted.  On Saturday John Schneider, in the last squad strung 7-MIDDLE Taps, which he said many were Brooklyns. Then on Sunday Jerry Smith also strung 7-MIDDLE Taps.  When the Jackpot is over $6K, we pay ties IN FULL, a feat that got both bowlers a nice $500.00 in CASH.

The Bracket Finals produced some great bowling!  There were several close matches with only a few pins making a difference.  A big shout out to Mike Crowe who twice survived the roll-off rounds by being the final survivor in both rounds. The match of the day was in the Semi-Finals, between Kai Pedro and Zac Clute.  After a spare In the final frame, Zac Clute needed an 8 count to tie or 9/strike to move on to the Championship Match.  A 7-count left him only two pins shy of a chance for his first Title, settling for a 3rd Place finals.

The Final Four

Kai Pedro, James Dowling, Ashley Kochel, Zac Clute

The Championship

Kai Pedro vs James Dowling

Our 3rd Quarter Champion is Kai Pedro, winning his second Tour Title, seven years after his first.  With his -8 pin handicap he needed to stay focused all day long.  Until his match in the Final 4Kai had cruised through the rounds of the Sweet 16 and Elite 8.  In the final 4 match with Zac Clute, he needed to strike out in the 10th to have a chance to beat him.  He got what he needed in the tenth to squeeze out a 2 narrow pin victory.  Using his Purple Hammer in the Championship MatchKai reeled off the front 9 to put pressure on his opponent.  Even with a split in the tenth, he was far enough ahead to pull out the BIG Win.  His victory got him a nice payday of $2,191.00.  He says he would like thank his family, daughter Auli’ilani, his love Jasmine, Dad Reuben who missed Qualifying & Mom Kanani (watching from above) for cheering him on.  It sounds like the family is planning to go on a shopping spree with his winnings.

Second Place went to James Dowling, who was looking for his 1st Tour Title.  He had a close call in the SWEET 16, by defeating Jesse McReynolds by a slim 3 pin margin.  He said this is first time in this format and loved every minute of it.  His 956 series on Sunday was the high qualifying series for the day.  His best finish of his short time on the Tour, brought him hefty check of $986.00... 3 times more than the new bowlers previous Tour earnings

The 3rd Place tie included Zac Clute & Ashley Kochel.  Having a nice Hot Streak, Ashley was going for her 4th Career Title and what could have been her 2nd title in the last 3 weeks.  She was still on a roll Sunday, beating her competitors by at least 40 pins each, until she ran out of gas in the Semi's against James Dowling.  Her effort got her a sweet check of $394.00.  The other 3rd place went to Zac Clute.  Still trying for his first title, Zac was involved in the match of the weekend (2-pin loss mentioned above) in the Final 4.  Nice effort Zac, your first title seems to be very close now.  Zac also brings home a sweet $394.00 check.
