Wrap Up

We're off to a Huge start to 2018 after a Record Breaking Kickoff Doubles Tournament last week at Secoma Lanes, we kept it going with another BIG day at Pacific Lanes with 138 entries and 28 bowlers making the Cash List.  The 5:00pm Squad was packed with 55 total bowlers!  With the 'Best 3 of 4' format in play, we crowned our newest Champ while TWO bowlers hit the 'Middle 7' 9-Taps and our Top 3 were all going for their first Tour Title.

'Middle-7' Assault!

Huyen Thai & Earl Kleist continued their rivalry in a different way this week after Kleist edged out Thai for Bowler of the Year in December.  First, it was Huyen going for the 'Middle 7', then, about an hour later, Earl had a run of his own!  We have video evidence of both attempts (below) but the Headlines above gave it away already as both were successful earning $500.00 each!  As if 7 straight 9-taps weren't enough, Earl went on to finish his entire game with taps on the final 11 shots, breaking the all-time tour record for 9-taps in one game!  To view video(s) click on left pic below for Earl and right for Huyen.

'Top 3' Battle for 1st Title

Toan Vu led the field after the 1st Squad and reentered in the 2nd Squad and actually bettered his score having two of the 'Top 3' scores for the day as we entered the final squad.  Toan's 786 wound up in 3rd Place, good for $396.00 as he earned his first Top 10 finish after having joined the tour just this last October.

Jason Hummell may very well have had this one in the bag only to be derailed by TWO horribly timed splits in the 9th & 10th frames of his final game after starting the game with 8 strikes!  It could be that finishing with an 805 wins a 'Best 3 of 4' format tourney most of the time, but still with the 2nd Place finish, Jason's trip from Eastern Oregon was well worth it as he earned a nice $771.00 to go with his Scratch Pot 999 series good for $135.00 and 277 game another $65.00!  Great shooting, Jason!

With a lot of  bystanders focused on Hummell, quietly a few lanes to his left was Shaun Firestone, putting together a very impressive set! Shaun joined the tour fairly recent and made the most of his very first Top 10 finish.  So good, in fact, that he won it all with a HUGE 826 series!  Someone even told us that Shaun had a 7-10 split in the 11th frame of his final game which had cost him the title...however, after further review, had that one errant shot been one frame earlier, he would have passed the title over to Hummell.  Firestone's final game wound up being a 282 (w/ hdcp), capping a personal best day on tour as he earned $1,678.00for his 1st Title!

Shaun had a lot of thank you's for us to share, including Donnie Roberts, Karol Knight, Nathan Firestone, Curtis White & Leon Bemis.  He also said that he was a little nervous, but credited the aforementioned folks with keeping him calm, adding that "I was excited, this is unbelievable!"  Shaun said he'd buy a new ball with his winnings and said that he used his Storm 'Matchup' ball and wore hisDexter 'SST5' shoes to get the job done!  Great bowling and congrats, Shaun!
