![]() 122 entries experienced an unusually low scoring day at Roxbury at both the Top and Bottom of the Cash List. We saw the Top 3 Places separated by ONLY TWO PINS, with scores of just 1000, 999 & 998. That TWO pin difference between 1st & 3rd Places, made a HUGE difference ($1,830.00) in the checks collected. The low scores helped to remind us, that you never know what the scoring will be like from week to week. The last time we visited Roxbury in September, using the same oil pattern, we had FOUR bowlers shoot over 1000. The time before that, there were ELEVEN over 1000. We would have bet against that 1000 series holding up all afternoon, but we were wrong. Even more unusual, was having 1/2 of last weeks winning Doubles Team repeat the feat this week AND 1/2 of the 2nd Place Doubles Team also duplicated last weeks finish. "When You're Hot, You're Hot"! The 9-Tap Jackpot got off easy this week as well, withJudy Buchanan & Earl Kleist each taking home $150.00 for their front 4-Taps. To all the 'Westside' Tour Members who didn't brave the frosty weather to travel Saturday, we had SIX Members who made the trip over the mountains from Yakima and FOUR of them were rewarded by making the Cash List!!
A VERY HOT Randy Kanzig earned his 1st Singles Title after sharing the Doubles Crown last week. It's quite a story for a guy who laid off bowling for 30 years. After retiring and moving from Sitka, Alaska to Yakima last August, he got back into bowling. He struggled for a while and now he's suddenly 'On-Fire'! One of several 'secrets' to Randy's win, was not giving-up after shooting a 152 in his second game. Despite losing many pins of handicap after last weeks performance, and that one bad game, he didn't let up, throwing two more strong games to complete his 1000 series. He genuinely didn't think that score would survive. I asked him what he credits for his improvement over the last few weeks. First he realized that he had to get rid of his 30 year old ball. Jim Kent at Nob Hill Bowl drilled his new Storm Crossroads and he also gave Randy a few pointers. Randy also got some tips from fellow Tour Member Paul Padilla. Then he practiced on applying those changes in December and it all started coming together over the Holiday break. GREAT way to start the year Randy! He thanks his wife Pam for making the trip to support him the last two weeks and they plan to use the$2,400.00 winnings to help with their new house in Yakima.
Getting a piece of 2nd Place for the second week in-a-row was an equally HOT Kareem Browne! Needing a mark in his last frame, Kareem got a bad break, when a 3 pin nearly fell but somehow managed to stand, leaving him a 3-10 baby split. If it fell... he wins! If he picks up the split... he wins! He couldn't have come closer to his first Title than missing by ONE PIN. He still took home a healthy $1,060.00 check. Almost lost in all that DRAMA, was Adam Stanton who was also going for his first Title, coming just TWO PINS shy. His biggest check yet, worth $570.00 was nice, but...! The mellow Cal Fisher (986) and the feisty Judy Buchanan (985) were right there in the hunt as well.
