At Roxbury, we had a very nice turnout of 107 entries, for our final Tournament of the summer. The 107 entries is a very significant number... with EVERY Tournament over the summer topping 100 entries, for the first time. That's a nice growth rate over the previous years, our THANKS to all!
Only THREE Members cracked 1000 this week and the scoring was remarkably well balanced. Of the 21 making the 'Cash List', 8 had handicaps of 30 or more pins, 6 had 11-30 pins, 7 had 10 or less. We also had some novelties on the 'Cash List', with both a Mother/Son (Emma & Ajay Jarata) and a Husband/Wife (Ryan Brown & LaRae Ross) each making the list. We ALMOST saw the 9-Tap Jackpot hit again, for the second time in three weeks. First, Chris Pierce had SIX No-Taps, then got a real strike on the BIG Money-Ball. With just one squad to go, Chris looked like a lock to take $250 from the Pot. Then in the last squad, Don Ratzburg stepped up and tossed the first 6 No-Taps, then also got all 10 on the 7th shot. As a result, they shared the $250 and the Jackpot still grew to $2,055.00.
Our Roxbury Champion David (Kawika) Kaea, takes his FIRST tour title. He lives in Ewa Beach, Oahu, Hawaii, first joining the Tour while visiting family here, in August 2007. Over the summer & fall of last year, he and his wife Frances had an extended stay, to help their daughter with the birth of her second child. Kawika even bowled in the Tacoma Senior Men's Travel league during that stay, making many friends in the area and on Tour. The Kaea's, just this last week, committed to opening a 9-Tap Tour franchise, in Honolulu, in early 2010, which will be one of the first outside of Western Washington. When asked what he'd do with his $1,922.00 in winnings, he said, paying for airline tickets to come back to bowl and the rest toward purchasing the Franchise. His strong 1053 was his 2nd highest series, topped only by an EQC Championship qualifying score at Skyway in his last visit last March. His Ebonite "NV Complete" was drilled for him in Las Vegas, at K & K Bowling, by his friend Sakae Fujii. Frances is almost always there as his biggest supporter, this week she was joined by her sister and brother-in-law Pat & Earl Cerrana, David's "Bowling Groupies". He also wanted to thank John Nissen for helping him to stay calm during that 2nd squad, and to say 'Mahalo' to fellow Hawaiian Pearl Sedeno for her support. Kawika is a retired Deputy Fire Chief for Hawaii, spending much of his career stationed at Pearl Harbor. He's also an AVID golfer. CONGRATS Kawika on win #1 (FINALLY!)!!
Making a BIG run at the Top Spot in the 3rd squad was Mac Brown, who came up just short of his 1st Title, with a fine 1029. His 2nd Place finish was good for a nice $869 payday. In 3rd Place, young Ajay Jarata cashes for his first time, since joining the Tour last March, taking home $367.00, with his 1011 series.
NEXT WEEK - BYE - TWO WEEKS - $1,000 ADDED HOOTERS/BUDWEISER OPEN at Bowlero Lanes. Labor Day Weekend - Sept 5th & 6th.
