With the GREAT weather and so much going on this weekend, we're not surprised that we came up slightly below our goals this weekend. The turnout was still very nice and the competition was FANTASTIC! 126 entries created a large Cash List of 31 members. 13 Finals spots were earned on Sunday, with scoring that was very similar to Saturday. Some very big Sunday scores were led by Chuck Hufford's 1084, and again we had a moderate cut score of 937. Rich Eaton held on to take all the 'Top Qualifier' booty ($100 Saturday Bonus - Hammer "'Hot Sauce Pearl" & 9-Tap Jacket), with his 1126. Chris Pierce and Bob Rouse each took a run at the 9-Tap Jackpot, both getting the first 5 No-Taps and both burying real strikes on the 6th shot, sharing the $250 Consolation.
Our EQC Quarterly Champion, is FOUR time winner Leon Bemis. 76 year old Leon won his first Title way back in 2001 and since he found the "Fountain of Youth", he's added another Title in each of the last three years. Through most of 2009 Leon has struggled, but you'd never have known it the way he shot this weekend. We've seen Leon get locked into a "Zone" like this in the past. His lowest game in the Bracket Finals was a 254 and his closest match was vs Nelson Sand in the Semi's, 262 to 254. Waterboy: Moments before his match with Nelson, Leon collided with another bowler sending his cup of water flying. His bowling shoes were soaked, top and bottom, but he dried them the best he could and went out unfazed, winning his match anyway. He used his Brunswick "Smash Zone" drilled by our sponsor, Norm Giannusa, at the Bowlero Precision Pro Shop. Leon is not only a regular Floor Director for the Tour, he also serves on the South Sound USBC Board of Directors and bowled in a total of 10 leagues (both winter & summer) this last year. Leon asked us to mention, that he thinks the 9-Tap Tour members, as a whole, are the Best and most Positive group he has ever bowled with in his 60 years in bowling. Nice sentiment! CONGRATS Leon on Title #4.
Bubbleboy: Gene Johnson had an unusual weekend. It appeared that Gene had 'just missed' qualifying on Saturday, with his "On the Bubble" score of 945. Later, an error had been detected, that moved Gene into the last qualifying spot. THEN... in the 1st round of the Finals, he got the LAST spot to move on to the 2nd Round. He made the most of good fortune, ripping off FOUR big games to make the Final Match. His 2nd Place finish paid a healthy $1,000.00. Tied for 3rd Place, Jesse Lane and Nelson Sand were also riding 'Hot Streaks' with some BIG games in their matches. They each took home $450.00 for 3rd.
BIG THANKS to our sponsors for the Added-Money this weekend, Emerald Queen Casino, Precision Pro Shops & Narrows Plaza! Narrows Plaza also did a GREAT job of keeping the weekend running smoothly and our bowlers appreciated the great conditions!
NEXT WEEK: Last year at Acme Bowl we had quite a day with 178 entries. Please note the squad times which are different than usual. We ask that if you can make the earlier squads, please do. It will help us even out the squads.
